VIX Curve Update & New Targets

We’ve officially re-entered normal VIX “contango” and all is right in the trading world again. For those of you who just read that and thought “wtf is contango,” watch this.

It’s a short explainer video from Andrew on the VIX Curve, which we use daily to inform our trading. It makes us better, smarter traders. If you’re not using it, you should start.

Here was the VIX curve before the election (I wrote to you about this earlier this week):

Which I refer to fondly as a “hockey stick curve,” but is more traditionally known as “Backwardation” (boring).

And here’s the VIX curve now…

…in contango.

If you’re new to this, the two main takeaways from this chart are:

The VIX futures (yellow line) is now ABOVE current VIX price (green line) instead of below
The VIX price (green line) has dropped to around 16, whereas before the Election it was 22+

We believe that in the next few weeks VIX could go even lower, to 14 or so (it’s down a whole point as I write this).

Since we knew this would happen (I wrote a full Option Pit Research about this a few days ago which you can read here that foreshadows the move), we traded it!
