In Option Pit Research’s last Stock Split write up (click here to read NVDA Post 2/5 if you haven’t yet) we explained the theme we see ahead of stock splits: they rally.
- NVDA’s up $100 since their announcement
- AMZN rallied 19% ahead of theirs
- TSLA up $20
- More examples here in NVDA Post 2/5
…on and on there’s evidence of stocks rallying into their splits over the last several years. And Nvidia over the last few weeks has been no exception.
So, what happens AFTER Friday’s split?
I’ll give you some generalizations, and then we’ll dive into some examples and the meat of where we think Nvidia will go after Friday, since, after all, that’s why all of you are here reading! I’m going to use a lot of the same stocks from NVDA Post 2/5, so you’ll have the full picture of both pre-split and post-split trends.
Generally, the day of the stock split, we’re going to see a peak in price. We believe Nvidia will likely follow this pattern on Friday.
But of course – we don’t just make these predictions up out of thin air – we learn from past examples. So let’s look at a few.
We’ll start with Amazon (20:1 split), June 3rd, 2022.
Notice the stock rallies all the way into the split on June 3rd (green arrow), hits a peak there at around $130 (black circle) on the split day, and then drops to almost exactly where it was prior to the rally into the split (red arrow), back around $100.
Tesla (3:1 split), August 25th, 2022:
Similar story. Rallies on several pushes higher into the split on August 25th. Peaks, and drops several dollars over the course of the next few days.
Walmart (3:1 split), February 26th, 2024:
Walmart – same thing. Spikes into split, where it peaks from most recent highs, drops for a (more) brief period – and then… and this is what we expect to see with Nvidia… continues higher long term:
Let’s look at one more.
Apple (4:1 split) on August 28th, 2020.
Immediately post-split it actually went up for a day (green arrow higher for 1 day right after the black circle), and then it dropped over a steady decline over the next two weeks.
These are just a few examples, so let’s look at overall trends post-split from years of market data. I want to show you a bit of research done by Rocky White in 2020 that still stands true today, and I’m going to call your attention to a few specific numbers – pay attention – this is going to help give shape to how we play to trade Nvidia out of Friday’s split.
In the first two weeks post-split (top chart, first column “2-Week Return”), stocks tend to drop: -0.06% average return.
Over the first month post-split, they flip positive (0.17% vs -0.06%), but they underperform the S&P (0.17% vs 0.47%).
By the third month post-split, they’re positive (1.50%) and reverse to outperform the S&P 500 (1.50% vs 1.44%).
This is the special sauce – this is the timing – and you’ll see this above with the examples I laid out post-split on Amazon, Tesla, Walmart and Apple. NOW. Let’s bring it back to today. I’m obligated to say (and this is true) that the future may not always match the past, but MOST OF THE TIME… it at least rhymes.
Nvidia has run up into its official split date (as predicted, and as evidenced above by other splits of similar nature).
We (Mark + Andrew + I) believe Nvidia could pop immediately following the stock split on Friday, or it could drop – that’s a toss up and we’ll have to see. Lucky for us – and for you – we don’t trade into stock splits, so we don’t care whether it drops or pops from Friday’s announcement to Monday. That’d be what we call “irresponsible.”
What we’re most confident in is that after NVDA’s initial reaction, it will settle lower for at least 2 weeks, maybe 1 month, maybe 2 (Mark talks about this in deeper detail in his Stock Split Live Session from this morning – make sure you catch that now if you haven’t).
That will give us our opportunity to scoop up Nvidia at a discount and ride it higher for the long term. We want to avoid the 30-Day “Stock Wash Sale Rule,” stay disciplined through the hype where Nvidia will LOOK much more attractive at $120 than it does now at $1200…
And then we’ll pounce.
Stay tuned for more info – a live reaction to the stock split on Friday – and of course, the trade that will come from this in the coming weeks.
Thanks for reading.
Stay tuned – talk soon.
