Another week, another all time high

Hey OP Crew,

AG’s alter-ego Vol Man here with my weekly analysis. As usual, I will start with my last forecast…

If some of my Option Volatility Jargon is vexing, our Glossary is here.

Last Week:

“FOMC and NVDA split this week are the big known items.  NVDA could well go the way of many splits and selloff post-split for a bit.  If those dollars flow to other stocks that likely will be a VIX flat event.  Traders are looking for the Fed to hold the line as I described above.  Unless there is a big surprise, expect a vanilla summer time week with realized vol in the single digits.  SPX  will struggle to make an all time high and coast between 5300 and 5375 at a 9% realized volatility.”

I am going to call it not great on my ouija board guess.  NVDA is adding 20 billion dollars in market cap every tick at this point and was the only stock up all week after a momentary selloff post split.  $117 to $130 is nothing to sneeze at.  SPX broke 5400 and closed near all time highs.  My only real win was realized vol is at the lows of the year in SPX.

Jpow walked back all the rate cut talk to 1 this year.  I have been firm in my belief he cannot cut while the USGOV spends like a drunken sailor.  At this point it is malpractice by the politicians.  Really only the Mag 3 stocks of Microsoft (Ticker: MSFT),Apple Inc (Ticker: AAPL) and Nvidia Inc (Ticker: NVDA) pulled up the S&P 500 this week.  That is really the push and pull for market sentiment, spending and debt versus business growth.

By the end of the week, European politics entered the VIX somewhat on Friday as those bond markets were caught in turmoil.  That pushed VIX up into the weekend before a 4 day week next week.  It might have an effect if bond markets take and cause equity liquidation in the short term.  That is something to watch.

SPX daily price action over the last 30 days

SPX got to an all time high Thursday before backing off.  The Fed staying consistent with lower rates and a softer CPI number push stock up 100 points SPX Tuesday to Wednesday.  We got the normal 100 point move, just prior to the FOMC.  The Fed is giving stocks nothing easy to the end of the year it.

SPX sigma (Vol per term average) levels over the last 30 days.

Sigma Vols dropped post number like normal and the Jun21 cycle got torched with the Jun19 holiday. Jul and Aug got a small bump from the Euro issues.

SPX realized volatility snap on  Jun 14 2024

Realized vol is 6.52% for the last 10 days to lows of the year.  60 day volatility is 10.74 and stocks have not had a 2% down day close to close in over 320 sessions.  The last time we had a period this long of no real selloff we got Volmageddon in 2018.

OP VIX Zone Watch

VIX ZONE 1 9-13 we are here

VIX ZONE 2 13.01 TO 17.99  We were here

VIX ZONE 3 18-23.99

VIX ZONE 4 24<

VIX ended up ended up just higher and all the VIX futures closed higher for the week which is surprising given the strong market performance.  The only thing on the horizon is the Left getting kicked out of office in France and bond markets are having a hard time digesting it.

Closing VIX curve, Jun 07 2024

Closing VIX cash and curve, Jun 14, 2024

The VIX curve is in a normal contango shape save for the Election Volatility Premium in the Oct cycle.  I see the bump up in futures as a little disturbing.

VIX 30 day chart with 1 min candles

The Jun21 implied vol says the week should be quiet but traders did add some premium risk.  The more I get skeptical of a rally via rising VIX, the more we rally so the VIX signal will likely deliver 5500 SPX.  The more the VIX gets jittery in 2024, the higher we rally.  When  the rest of the market decide to participate, that will get us to 5500 right quick.

Weekly Profit Cycles is opening for a quarterly subscription if you want to learn to trade VIX/SPY exclusively.  I am 14 for 17 for Opens in WPC. So getting paid to own SPY puts in an up market is something anyone can learn to do.
